On November 29, Microsoft's Windows Live team introduced updates to Live SkyDrive, shortly after the launch users started reporting issues opening & 'lost" SkyDrive files and notebooks from the Office hub on Windows Phones.
According to a Inside Windows Live blog post by Omar Shahine, they're not "lost" after all. Shahine writes:
"For any of you who are using a Windows Phone, you may have noticed that if you had previously used the Office hub to view any of your OneNote notebooks or Office documents, you may have received a message that the items were deleted from the server, or could not be downloaded."
"Your items have NOT been deleted from the server."
Adding, "What happened is that the URLs for the documents have changed, and this has confused the Office hub into thinking they were removed," explained Shahine.
He further explains:
Issue: We're aware that some people are experiencing issues with opening SkyDrive files and notebooks from the Office hub on the Windows Phone, such as:
When opening a SkyDrive document from the documents pivot, or a document pinned to the start screen, an error message appears saying that the file could not be downloaded.
When opening a OneNote section, an error message appears saying that the section has been deleted from the server.
Workaround: To fix this issue, you will need to reset Office. In the event that you experience one or both of the above errors, be assured that your files have not been deleted, and no sections from the notebook were actually deleted, even though they may fail to sync temporarily.
Shahine later in the post offers a workaround for getting OneNote files to show back up on Windows Phone, basically by resetting Office on the phone. Follow the steps below to reset Office on your phone:
Important note: When you reset Office, it will delete your local phone documents. It will also remove any pinned items from your home screen, so you'll need to pin them again afterwards.
- Go to the Office hub on your phone, and if you don't have copies elsewhere, email any existing documents on your phone to yourself, so that you have a copy.
- Go to Settings.
- Go to the Applications pivot.
- Select Office.
- Tap the Reset Office button. (If you get a message that Office could not be reset, reboot your phone and try again).
Once Office is reset, your files and notebooks should open properly from SkyDrive.
