WordPress 4.8 Evans Is Now More Intutive With New Widgets

Now you can easily find local events just by logging in to your dashboard and looking at the new Events and News dashboard widget.

Version 4.8 of WordPress, named as "Evans" on Thursday, brings in new features in 4.8 with more ways to express and represent brands. The new feature include like an old friend: link improvements, three new media widgets covering images, audio, and video, an updated text widget that supports visual editing.

Also, the new release brings an upgraded news section in dashboard which brings in nearby and upcoming WordPress events.

New Widgets in WordPress 4.8

With WordPress 4.8, it's easier than ever, adding an image to a widget without needing to know code — simply insert an image right within widget settings, and it appear automatically.

  • Publishers can also now easily add any video like a Welcome message from their Media Library to a sidebar with new Video widget.
  • Podcaster are not left behind, as they can too now add a widget with audio file from the media library, by just going to widget settings, then select a file.
  • Rich-text editing capabilities with WordPress 4.8 are now native for text widgets. You can now add a widget anywhere and format, create lists, add emphasis, and quickly sand easily insert links.

Another great new feature added today streamlines the process to links without ending up with text becoming a linked item with new link boundaries.

Also, the community improvements are now available letting you easily find local events via WordPress dashboard, new Events and News dashboard widget.

Even developers will feel more happy with Evans, as the team adds a handful of features including:

The admin panel headings are now more accessible and improve peoples' experience using assistive technologies, as it no longer need to add new CSS rules for add new links and other extraneous contents.

This version now removed core support for WMV, WMA files and Silverlight, meaning "will no longer embed automatically," and now only still display as a download link.

Additionally, new hooks and tweaks to more granularly control multisite and user counts per network have been added, along with removing calls to is_super_admin().

With TinyMCE added to text widget, a new Text-Editor JavaScript API now instantiates the editor after page load and can be use to add an editor instance to any text area, customize it with buttons and functions.

New base media widget REST API schema opens up possibilities for even more media widgets like galleries or playlists in future.

New responsive breakpoints added to customizer sidebar, now use percentage-based widths instead of pixels.
