Bill Morein: This is a Visual Studio Tools for Office 2008 beta add-in that lets you track games right inside the home tab of the Word 2007 ribbon. The add-in shows the score, inning, and base situation for games in progress, tracking them by pulling data from a MSN sports web service. To use it once installed, click on the button to pick a team. It will then update the score every 30 seconds as long as there is an internet connection.
I put this together in a couple hours to test out VSTO and RibbonX, but I think it should be pretty stable. I can’t completely guarantee it won’t crash Word, however.
To install, download and extract this file. If you do want to use it, there are a few caveats about the install:
- This was built using VSTO 2008 Beta 2, so it requires the Beta CLR and VSTO runtime. It will automatically install them if needed but that it takes some time and if you don’t like installing beta software you might want to hold off.
- There is a known bug in VSTO Beta 2 where the runtime doesn’t always intall correctly. If the add-in doesn’t seem to work, go to “Programs” in the control pane and do a repair on “Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Office Runtime 3.0”. Following the repair it should work.
- To uninstall, the app is called “Baseball” in add/remove programs.
