Virgin Media announced a free upgrade for its fibre optic broadband customers, injecting an "adrenaline shot" of performance to boost upload speeds; "The upgrade has started to roll out and will automatically be applied to customers across the country on its up to 10Mb, up to 20Mb and up to 50Mb services. Unlike some of its competitors" "free" upgrades, customers will be able to take advantage of these new upload speeds as soon as their area is enabled, without the need to sign up or re-contract."

Virgin also announced a new traffic management system for peak times. Downstream traffic management for 50Mb services will remain unaffected but the 5Mb upload speeds will be scaled back to 1.75Mb between 10am and 3pm and 4pm and 9pm if usage is particularly high. If you want to know when your area is due to get the new upload speeds then Virgin has created a handy mini-site for you.
