In their effort to revamp public conversation on its platform Twitter this month has taken on to the troll-like behaviours that distort conversation particularly in communal areas, like search.
Today, the company is proactively addressing this disruptive behavior that don’t violate its policies but negatively impact the health of the conversation with filtering out negative tweets in search and in conversations.
The new algorithms which integrates behavioral signals into the tweets will now take into account these negative signals (those distort and detract public conversation) while ranking tweets, includes many new signals such as:
- Tweets from account that has not confirmed email address,
- If a user sending tweets has multiple accounts,
- Accounts that repeatedly mention accounts that don’t follow them in their tweets,
- A tweet that prompted users to block the account or behavior that might indicate a coordinated attack.
In addition, Twitter is also taking into account, how accounts on its platform are connected with those that violate rules and their interaction with each other.
Twitter notes, this new approach of ranking tweets will not include actual content, however they will be hiding and can be seen by clicking on “Show more replies” or by choosing to see “everything” in search settings. That’s because, this troll-like behavior does not violate policies.
That said, henceforth, contents that are contributing to healthy conversation will be more visible in conversations and search.
Twitter adds, that filtering out negative tweets already has a positive impact resulting a 4% drop in abuse reports from search , and an 8% decline in abuse reports from conversation.
As a results, only fewer tweets that disrupt are now seeing by people. Adding, Twitter said, there will be some false positives but it will crease out soon as the tools will learn over time.
