Toshiba Qosmio G40 sports a large 17” high resolution screen with satellite speakers built in either side means that the rest of the casing its not exactly on the small side, this is not a slim notebook PC, its 44cm wide and 30 cm deep, admittedly its only 2.5cm high with the lid closed. This laptop weighs in a 4.5kg (10lb) so it’s no lightweight. On the inside, a good quality keyboard, and touchpad incorporating a finger print scanner sit alongside the striking Harmon Kardon speaker grills, there’s a large silver volume control as well as a jog dial.
The G40 packs an Intel Duo core 2.4Ghz processor and 2GB RAM. This version also includes 2 small form factor 200GB hard drives (apparently weighing just 90 grams each), and comes installed with Windows Vista Ultimate. To make full use of Media Center there is a a Toshiba PCI DVB-T\Analogue hybrid tuner setup, allowing you to watch and record two channels simultaneously.
The G40 is very well connected and includes HDMI, VGA as well as S-VHS in\out, i.Link (Firewire) and a composite video in jack with adapter cable. A multiread card slot covers Memory Stick\xDA\SD cards and (count ‘em) 5 USB connections.
The G40 sports a HD DVD player and HD writer. Now…has someone told Toshiba that the HD-DVD Vs Blu-ray race has been won? It’s so difficult to find HD-DVDs now I couldn’t even put it to the test, but it played regular DVDs without any problems.
