After Lightbox JS, Cody released ThickBox a little twist on the Lightbox technique allowing to show html as well as images. ThickBox is very different since it's going in another direction to use simply href, src, and title for the popups and replaced Prototype by JQuery which make it more lighter (around 20k). Currently Thickbox handle the following types .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .png, .htm, .html, but it's not difficult to change it to handle more, and to use it simply include the necessary javascript and use "thickbox" for the link's class.
