If you have a great idea for a video game burning deep within you, Doritos wants to hear about it. The Unlock Xbox contest is looking to find the perfect idea for the first user-generated Xbox 360 game. Here’s what you need to know:
Submissions will be judged on the following criteria: 40% creativity/originality, 30% adherence to creative assignment, 30% overall appeal. Submissions must contain a written description of the game (no more than 500 words), and may contain up to 5 media files (total) to bring your idea to life.
This includes up to 3 image files that are no more than 3 MB each in size (.jpeg, .gif formats ONLY) and 2 video/audio files (.mpg, .mp4, .mov, .flv, .avi, .wmv, .mp3, .wav formats ONLY) that are no more than 50 MB each in size. While media files aren’t required, the better our understanding of your idea, the better your chances are of winning.
The five finalists receive some pretty swank loot, including a 42-inch plasma TV, limited edition 360 Elite, ten 360 titles, 2,000 Microsoft Points, a one-year Gold subscription to Live, a surround sound system, and a pro gaming chair. The grand prize winner gets all of that, plus the glory of working with a team of pro game developers to make his or her idea into a real-live 360 game.
You can submit up to three entries, with the usual caveats about being careful not to submit anything with nudity or swearing. Some violence is ok, just be sensible about it. And of course, keep in mind, your game idea has to “bring to life what Doritos is all about,” which in my household means rapid consumption of entire bags followed by bellyaches.
What I find cool about this contest is that it doesn’t require you to know a lick of programming, just to have a general visual concept of how your game would work, thus opening it up to a much wider range of people. The inspiration for this contest is more than likely the successful Burger King games, but my favorite of the product placement titles is still the original Cool Spot. The sequels were a bit lackluster, but the original was a darn fine little platformer that’s still worth playing.
