DON’'T blame Apple for the constant program crashes on the Macintosh computer of the '90s - it's all Microsoft’s fault. So says Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, who is in Australia for a speaking tour covering the company's business philosophy and the legacy of Steve Jobs.

For those who had a Mac in 1996, may remeber the hard time using the Apple OS coupled with Internet Explorer. Well, that's because of Microsoft.

"Everyone who ran Internet Explorer you would have several crashes, every day. Move something into folder, it would crash, and you'd have to restart. Type something, crash restart," Wozniak said.

Although Apple did think the problem was their fault at first, but it soon turned out to be Internet Explorer causing the problems for users. The engineer who built Apple's first computer series, the Apple I and II, said he found that people who ran Netscape or another program from Germany called ICAP, never experienced crashes.

Woz, when asked if he would buy Facebook shares regardless of the price said,

"I would invest in Facebook," he said in an interview yesterday on Bloomberg Television. I don't care what the opening price is.

In other, Microsoft news, the Redmond comapny has invested a $100,000 in a Russian firm, "Pirate Pay."

According to Torrent Freak, the Russian based "Pirate Pay" startup is promising the entertainment industry a pirate-free future. With help from Microsoft, the developers have built a system that claims to track and shut down the distribution of copyrighted works on BitTorrent.

Their first project, carried out in collaboration with Walt Disney Studios and Sony Pictures, successfully stopped tens of thousands of downloads. The idea sounds very similar to what happened to Napster and LimeWire where the company floods clients with false information.

The company doesn't reveal how it works, but they appear to be flooding clients with fake information, masquerading as legitimate peers.

"We used a number of servers to make a connection to each and every P2P client that distributed this film. Then Pirate Pay sent specific traffic to confuse these clients about the real IP-addresses of other clients and to make them disconnect from each other," Andrei Klimenko says.

The end result was that 44,845 transfers were successfully stopped. How many downloads slipped through, and whether the downloaders didn't simply try again later is unknown. Pirate Pay don't disclose their exact rates but say they charge between $12,000 and $50,000 depending on the scope of the project.

Also, according to a survey from the American Customer Satisfaction Index, Microsoft's software scored 75 points in 2011, down from 78 points in 2010, reports computerworld.

The three-point drop from 2010's results -- representing a decline of about 4% -- put Microsoft software's satisfaction rating at its lowest level since 2009, but still higher than the company's worst showing of 69 in 2008, when it was dealing with the fallout over Windows Vista.

Microsoft's skid in 2011 wasn't due to any Vista-like debacle, said David VanAmburg, director of ACSI. "We're not finding any lapse in quality per se," said VanAmburg, referring to Windows 7, the current edition of Microsoft's operating system. "It's somewhat of a relativity game, where the mobile environment is recasting how people think of traditional software."

That thinking revolves around words like "cumbersome," "difficult" and "expensive." He added, "For 99 cents you buy an app that does some kind of very cool thing, and by comparison, traditional software looks cumbersome."

"I don't think this problem is only Microsoft, it's the entire software industry," said VanAmburg. "Mobile has taken a little bit of the edge off software."
