Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer drew a large crowd of students at the University of Washington computer science department on Oct'14th. A student's question stood out as particularly noteworthy, as a barometer of the general mood.
"So it seems like Microsoft might have a harder time recruiting new employees than other companies -- for e.g. I've heard that Microsoft spends 10 times recruiting an employee as Apple does," he said. "And I know when companies come here and talk to us, other companies have made a much more compelling argument as to, you know, the challenges of the things that they're working on, as opposed to Microsoft. I was just wondering if you thought that might be a problem, and if you had any potential solutions."
