Visio Pro for Office 365, recently updated to help visualize work in new and meaningful ways by allowing users to create visual representations of a database from its source data using a reverse engineering tool that "updates the illustrations as the underlying source information changes."

"Visio can connect to a number of database solutions, including SQL Server, MySQL and Oracle, to create a real-time illustration of a database, which updates in Visio as the underlying information changes," the Office team said. "The reverse engineering helps users drill into specific database elements, such as tables and views, to better understand how they relate to each other"—all without showing the actual source data.

In addition, teachers and students can now use maps from Visio Guy in the classroom to learn about the locations of states and territories and interact with them easily in the diagram.

To get started, just use the intuitive wizard to select the source database and specific elements to include in the visual. In addition to tables and views, users can also incorporate stored procedures and specific table objects, like primary keys, indexes and triggers.

Unified Modeling Language (UML) 2.5 templates "help architects, software engineers and software developers create diagrams of software-based systems and business processes. " The three new templates added help to create:

  • Component diagrams showing components, ports and interfaces and the relationships among them.
  • Deployment diagrams illustrating the deployment architecture of software artifacts to nodes.
  • Communication diagrams highlighting the interactions between lifelines that use sequenced messages in a free-form arrangement.

Finally, education templates with focus on extracurricular activities like music, sports and gaming are available as well and help to easily create fun diagrams leveraging the smart shapes in Visio Pro for Office 365 to foster learning in these subjects.

SharePoint Framework reaches general availability, allowing developers and administrators to build and deploy parts that are used by Office 365 users in their production environments.

Since, SharePoint Framework Developer Preview was released in August, "over 30 code samples are now live in the GitHub repository for code samples," the Office team said.

The general availability tools will be rolling out over the next week to Office 365 tenancies.

To get started, developers can learn more about building web parts and custom solutions with the SharePoint Framework at the Office Dev Center, leveraging code samples.
