At SharePoint Conference 2012, Microsoft highlighted significant investments in social, cloud and mobile capabilities and an array of new product enhancements in SharePoint 2013.
Microsoft also revealed that SharePoint has grown to more than $2 billion, adjusted, in annual revenue. "This growth underscores the power and passion of the SharePoint community of customers, partners and developers," said Jeff Teper, cvp, Microsoft.

The new Microsoft Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2012 Preview 2, he said work with "Napa" tools for online development of Office 365 apps, "include templates and designers to facilitate app development, and support the LightSwitch HTML client for easy creation of data-centric business apps in SharePoint 2013."
"Napa is the fastest way to get started with Office and SharePoint development. Whether you're just taking a tour of this lightweight companion to Visual Studio, or would like to start building apps right away - go ahead - Napa is a free app for SharePoint and browser-based. It is available as part of the Office 365 SharePoint Developer site," Microsoft explains.
With Office 2013/New Office, new Office Store apps -- which were codenamed "Agaves" -- can be hosted in the cloud and/or published and sold through the new Office Store. Enterprise IT users also can be privately distribute Napa-developed apps via an internal App Catalog.
Microsoft also is making available a second preview of its LightSwitch HTML Client for Visual Studio 2012. This client is now included as part of the Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2012 release.
"These apps can be standalone, but with this preview developers can now also quickly build and deploy data-driven apps for SharePoint using the new web standards-based apps model," posted Somasegar.
New product enhancements include the following:
- "new and simplified user experience. Share documents inside or outside your organization with a single click, drag and drop content into document libraries, edit lists inline, and create new sites in seconds.
- Document store and sync. Use SkyDrive Pro to store and sync your documents across all your devices.
- Task management. Organize your work with task lists and project timelines. Consolidate task management across SharePoint, Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Project.
- Smarter search. Find what you're looking for with the new and improved FAST Search. Customize and narrow your search for more relevant results and discover related people and documents with recommendations.
- Core services. Manage risk with eDiscovery across SharePoint, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Lync and file shares. Create dynamic websites with cross-site publishing and enhanced Web content management. Improve scalability and performance with a new cloud architecture," informs Microsoft.
Microsoft also unveiled the company's vision for the future of enterprise social. As a first step toward that vision, the company shared a road map for SharePoint and Yammer integration.
Microsoft also announced changes to Yammer packaging and pricing, consolidating Yammer's paid services into a single offering, Yammer Enterprise, and reducing the price of the service from $15 to $3 per user per month.
For Enterprise Agreement customers, it further announced plans to ship Yammer Enterprise with Microsoft SharePoint Online and the Office 365 Enterprise plans with no change in price for existing customers.
"This means customers get the best cloud productivity service and the best enterprise social service together -- Office 365 plus Yammer," said David Sacks, cvp, Microsoft.

SharePoint Online (Plan 2) + Yammer Enterprise: $8 per user/per month
Office 365 E Plans 1-4 + Yammer Enterprise: $8 - $24 per user/per month
SharePoint 2013 also introduces a new Cloud App Model for the more than 700,000 SharePoint developers and a new Office Store.
Finally, Microsoft also introduced new native SharePoint mobile apps to give people access to SharePoint news feeds and documents on Windows 8, Windows Phone, iOS and Android devices.
Microsoft is also working on native mobile SharePoint-connected applications for Windows 8, Windows Phone and iOS, which will begin coming to market by early 2013.
A separate SkyDrive Pro app will provide Windows 8 and iOS users with access to SkyDrive Pro. "It allows users to save SharePoint content for offline use. There's already a SkyDrive Pro app available as part of the Office Hub on Windows Phone 8. Microsoft officials plan to announce availability targets for the Windows 8 and iOS versions of this app "at a later time."
All apps will work with both SharePoint 2013 and SharePoint Online.
Preview 2 of Napa, can be downloaded and installed into Visual Studio 2012 (Professional, Premium or Ultimate). Just click "Open in Visual Studio", to get the latest Office Developer Tools, and continue developing in Visual Studio 2012.
Microsoft also released new Infrastructure Planning and Design (IPD) Guide for System Center 2012 - Operations Manager for download.
"This guide outlines the infrastructure design elements that are crucial to a successful implementation of Operations Manager. It guides you through the process of designing components, layout, and connectivity in a logical, sequential order. You'll find easy-to-follow steps on identification and design of the required management groups, helping you to optimize the management infrastructure," Microsoft stated.
