Back in December 2011, Microsoft added a new sharing feature to Live SkyDrive that help you get a link to any file or folder on SkyDrive and send that link to friends. You can choose to let friends edit or add files, or choose to make the link read-only.
Mirosoft says, since the launch of the feature, SkyDrive users have created over 13 million links--copying and pasting them into their favorite apps or services.
Since, the SkyDrive users are now taking advantage of the connected address book that put together friends' addresses across Facebook, Google, and LinkedIn to enjoy faster and easier sharing -- however, users are facing problems as the links are too long.
To provide a great experience to users when sharing links, Microsoft in partnership with Bit.ly create a URL shortening domain for SkyDrive URLs, namely "SDRV.MS."
In fact, the company has managed to shorten links before introducing the new domain, but reduced only 40 percent of the links' length.
Here is a summary of the changes: links just got a bit friendlier:
- "Microsoft shortened its regular URLs by 40%. Its previous URLs didn't even fit inside a Tweet!
- You can shorten them even further thanks to partnership with bitly and the new domain for shortened SkyDrive URLs: http://sdrv.ms
- Micorsoft added OpenGraph support to its URLs so that when you paste them into places like Facebook, a nice thumbnail preview gets generated," informs Omar Shahine, group program manager.
"Since bitly powers the shortener, you also get great power features. For example, you can add a '+' to the end of any short URL to see statistics. You can also generate a QR code for that URL by appending '.qrcode' to that URL," Shahine concludes.
