New 42PF9831D HD Ready LCD TV. The model’s main selling point is the aforementioned and otherworldly-inspired ‘Ambilight Full Surround’ technology which projects ambient light independently from all four sides of the screen. The notion is that is creates a continuous lighting effect, with the ambient output automatically matching the dominant colours on screen to extend the viewing field. Philips’ also points a finger to scientific research which claims it can reduce eye strain.
Much like the afterlife itself this Ambient Full Surround technology will probably divide consumers into believers and cynics but the rest of the spec is less disputable. The 42PF9831D features a WXGA (1366 x 768) screen with stunning 4500:1 contrast and 550 cd/m2 brightness, an integrated digital tuner for DVB-T reception. Connectivity is superb with 2x HDMI, 2x Scart and a component input while an Ethernet port means DivX, Jpeg, MP3, Mpeg4, Mpeg2 and Xvid media formats can be streamed directly from a PC. WiFi, a USB port and 7-in-1 memory card reader complete the extensive line up.
