Google made available an integrated PDF viewing in Chrome developer build for Windows and Mac, which can be enabled by visiting chrome://plugins. “Linux support is on the way, and we’ll be enabling the integration by default in dev channel in coming weeks. We would also like to work with Adobe Reader team to bring full PDF feature set to Chrome using same next generation browser plug-in API,” explains Google.
With this effort:
- PDF files will render as seamlessly as HTML web pages, and basic interactions will be same (zooming & searching will work as users expect). PDF rendering quality is still a work in progress, and we’ll improve it substantially before releasing it to beta and stable channels.
- PDF functionality will be contained within security “sandbox” to protect users, and automatically receive latest Chrome’s PDF support. For advanced PDF features, we plan to give them ability to launch Adobe Reader separately.
