Ontario's Amber Alert program is teaming up with Facebook to widen its reach in finding missing children. A Facebook page will broadcast Amber Alerts issued in the province, and Facebook users who subscribe to the page will receive alerts when a child has been abducted.
The Amber Alert program works to bring missing children to public's attention and harness the group effort to find children. Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Chris Lewis said when a child goes missing it's critical to get information out to the public fast.
Ontario Liberal Michael Colle notes Facebook has more than 400 million active users worldwide, including more than seven million in Ontario.
Facebook Canada's managing director Jordan Banks said it's a viral means to spread the word when a child needs help.
