Microsoft IT is facing an issue that affects many organizations. Data centers are reaching space and power-consumption capacity rapidly, while many servers that data centers house are running at very low utilization. To address these issues, Microsoft IT is pursuing virtualization aggressively as a way to reduce the number of physical servers running in the data centers, while still providing the same services to Microsoft business groups. However, implementing virtualization has meant that personnel within many Microsoft business groups have had to change their thinking regarding server resources.
