Microsoft said that they retiring the TechNet Subscription service. "Microsoft will continue to honor all existing TechNet Subscriptions. Subscribers with active accounts may continue to access program benefits until their current subscription period concludes," Microsoft stated.
New TechNet customers can still purchase a subscription before August 31st this year, existing subscribers can renew on or before this date. "The subscription must be activated through September 30, 2013," the compand added.
In other news, with Microsoft losing the trademark to the SkyDrive in the UK, it appears Microsoft plan to re-brand the cloud storage service as 'Microsoft Drive.' As you can see in the picture below, the new name is coded in to the Windows 8.1, and can be seen in PC Settings once a registry setting is tweaked.
Also, on June 24, through a close collaboration between SAP, HP and Microsoft, a new world record was achieved and certified by SAP for a three-tier SAP Sales and Distribution (SD) standard application benchmark, running on a 2-processor physical server, Microsoft announced.
This sparks a big shift. It means customers can virtualize SAP ERP solutions with confidence and deliver the high levels of performance required for tier-1 applications.
"The best part?" says Brad Anderson, corporate vice president of Windows Server and System Center. "Not only was SAP ERP 6.0 (with Enhancement Package 5) running on SQL Server 2012, on Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, but the configuration was completely virtualized on Hyper-V."
Anderson further notes that "this benchmark result is 30 percent higher than a previous 2-socket, virtualized configuration running on VMware vSphere 5.0."
Microsoft also revealed that Windows 8 has reached the 100,000 app figure in just seven months after its official launch. The figure is even faster than the Windows Phone Store, which took no less than 18 months to achieve the figure.
