Microsoft has released a Safari- and Firefox-compatible plugin that adds support for its new WPF/E format for the delivery of rich media content over the Internet.
WPF/E (Windows Presentation Foundation/Everywhere) is a cross platform extension to Windows Vista’s WPF graphics subsystem that provides a subset of WPF features, such as hardware accelerated video, vector graphics, and animations to platforms other than Vista, specifically Windows XP and 2000, Firefox, Safari, Linux and mobile devices.
Essentially, WPF is Microsoft’s alternative to Adobe’s Flash-based Flex environment for delivering both rich media content and applications via a Web browser.
WPF/E Community Technology Preview for Mac (Dec 2006) is a free download from microsoft.com/downloads.
The plugin expires on 18 February 18 2007 and will periodically ping Microsoft.com to verify its integrity (the only information that will be communicated will be your IP address and the module version).
