One devoted Last.fm fan asked the question many have wondered about in the wake of the company’s acquisition by CBS: “Is the reason you aren’t joining in simply because you have the resources to be able to afford the new rates?”
Taking the brave route and moving into a debate that could have spiraled wildly out of control, Miller responded to the critics by reiterating the company’s position. Miller said, “We aren’t joining because we don’t think this is the right way to go about this issue. We as a music playing company need to work with the industry and that means talking to everyone. We don’t feel like all routes have been exhausted yet, and as such see no need for drastic action.” Interestingly, a large portion of the critical comments were peppered with praise for Last.fm as a service, so despite the user fallout, a massive defection from the service doesn’t appear likely.
