Microsoft is working on including Windows Live web messenger in the next update to Hotmail, that will allow you to sign in whenever you choose, or automatically whenever you sign into Hotmail. This will be considered yet another location for signing in; the latest version of Messenger allows you to sign in from multiple locations and receive the same messages at each location.

Once you are signed in, you can use the dropdown menu to change your status, sign out of Messenger in Hotmail, sign out of all Messenger locations, or view your Messenger contact list. When contacts sign in, you will get the usual Messenger notification in the bottom right, and it will match the theme that you have chosen for Hotmail.
