Communicating across languages in Gmail becomes easier, newly added "Input Tools" in Gamil --that comprises of over 100 virtual keyboards, transliteration and IMEs. Google Input Tools makes it easy to enter text in the languages you want, when you want them.
"Today we're adding more than 100 virtual keyboards, transliteration and IMEs--collectively called input tools--in Gmail," Gmail team announced.
"With these new virtual keyboards, Gmail now supports typing in 75 languages"--which is a big jump from the five languages that were initially supported when Google introduced Indic transliteration in Gmail in 2009.
Adding Google said, "These tools enable you to type in the language and keyboard layout you're accustomed to, making it easy to keep in touch with family, friends and coworkers from any computer. You can even switch between languages with one click."
To try it out, just check the box next to Enable input tools under Language in Settings. Once you've enabled it, you'll see the Input Tools icon next to the Settings button in your toolbar, and you can turn on and off any Input Tool from there.
In addition to Gmail, Input Tools are also available in other select Google products such as Google Drive, Google Search, Google Apps, and Google Translate.
Google says, it will make Input Tools available to other platforms soon.

To enable Input Tools, follow these steps:
- Click the gear icon in the upper right, then select "Settings".
- In the General tab, select the check box next to "Enable input tools" under the "Language" section.
- In the "Input Tools" setting dialog that appears, select the input tool you'd like from the "All input tools" field and click the gray arrow so that it appears in the "Selected input tools" field.
- You can also double click the input tool to add it to the "Selected input tools" field
- You can re-order selected input tools by clicking on a tool and clicking on the up/down arrow that appears
- Click Ok in the setting dialog
- Click Save Changes in the bottom of the General tab
Once you've enabled Input Tools, you will see an input tools icon on the left of the gear icon.
- Change the user language setting to the language you'd like to type in. To do this, follow the instructions in this article.
- Change the document's language setting to the language you'd like to type in. To do this, click the File drop-down menu, hover over Language…, then select the language you'd like to use.
Once Input Tools is enabled, you will see an icon on the right side of the toolbar in a document. Note that Input Tools is only available in Document and Spreadsheet right now.
You do not need to enable or set up Input Tools in Translate, unlike you do for other Google applications. Input Tools automatically displays for your chosen language.
Currently, only virtual keyboard is offered for Google Search. You do not need to enable or set up virtual keyboard in Search. It is enabled automatically depending on your chosen Google Search domain.
Update 10/10: In the news today for domains (Google Apps for Business, Government and Education) --Enhanced email management by organizational units is now available letting the Apps administrators now have the ability to apply email settings like IMAP & POP access to Gmail, offline access, email forwarding, email footers, etc. to organizational units.
Also, a collection of troubleshooting tools for Google Apps users dubbed "Google Apps Toolbox," now available to Google Apps users. The following tools are currently part of the toolbox:
- CheckMX analyzes the public DNS records of a domain to look for common MX record misconfigurations.
- Messageheader analyzes email message headers to look for the cause of mail delivery delays.
- LogAnalyzer analyzes locally stored log files to explain errors in the following products:
- ChromeOS Devices
- Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook
- Google Apps Migration for Microsoft Outlook
- Google Apps Migration for Microsoft Exchange
- Google Apps Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server
- Google Apps Directory Sync
Google also announced Docs Export Format Change is delayed until 1/31/2013 for scheduled release domains.
"On September 25, we announced that we would be changing some of the file exporting functionality in Google Docs on October 1 for scheduled release track customers. We recognize that some of our customers would like more time before the change goes into effect. As you may have noticed, that change did not go into effect on October 1. In order to support our customers and help them through the transition, we have delayed the export format change for scheduled release track customers until January 31, 2013," Google posted.
Adding, "We recently added the ability to export Google documents to the newer Microsoft Office formats that rely on open standards (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx)." "To continue adding new features and innovations to Google Docs, we'll be focusing our resources on exporting to these newer open formats rather than the older, proprietary Office formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt) that were used in Office 97-2003," Google said.
