Internet Explorer 10 for Windows Phone 8, has some significant under-the-hood changes and is built on the same powerful engine and features as that on IE10 for Windows 8.
"What might not be obvious at first glance are the significant under-the-hood changes we've made. Internet Explorer 10, for example, now shares more than a name with its counterpart on Windows 8: Both phone and PC versions are built on the same powerful engine and offer improved handling of key web technologies and standards, including new support for touch-enabled sites," a Microsoft official stated in a blog entry on Windows Phone blog giving behind-the-scenes of the IE10 for Windows Phone 8.
IE10 for Windows Phone 8 now has integration with Xbox SmartGlass, which allows you to send the website you are looking at to your Xbox 360, via the Xbox option from Internet Explorer 10's Share menu.
"just choose the Xbox option from Internet Explorer 10's Share menu (More > Share Page) to launch the Xbox SmartGlass app on your phone and send the website you were looking at to your TV (here's a video showing how it works)," the blog explains.
And, if your handset supports NFC, IE10 can now share items by simply hitting the Tap+Send option.
Another new feature called "Data Sense" help reduce your data consumption while browsing the web without slowing things down or changing how sites appear. Microsoft estimates that users will be able to browse 45% more websites on the same data plan.
And, the SmartScreen Filter help keep users safe from malicious websites.
IE10 for Windows Phone also offers "Do Not Track," which signals websites that you prefer not to have information collected about your visit as you browse. "DNT is turned on if you choose the "recommended" setup option the first time you use Internet Explorer. (Not sure if it's on? Go to Settings > Internet Explorer> Advanced Settings."
As for the design, Microsoft has relocated the tabs and favorites buttons into the more menu and allowed more space for the address bar. Microsoft has also offered the option to configure the address bar button to make it refresh/stop, show favorites, or tabs.
"Under More > Settings in Internet Explorer 10 you'll find a new option to configure the address bar button, and make it refresh/stop (default), favorites, or tabs."
Find on Page is now fast and robust as it received an upgrade from IE10 on desktop. "When you search for something, we also use your Windows Phone accent color to highlight the current match - a small way to make your Windows Phone more personal," Microsoft added.
The new Lenses feature in Windows Phone 8 enable developers to extend the native camera viewfinder of the phone. "The camera application space is currently a hotbed of innovation; our Lenses feature makes Windows Phone a compelling place to build these types of apps," Microsoft posted.
And, for users, "lenses are presented as an option every time they use the camera on their phone. Lenses give users a contextually relevant way to access your photo manipulation apps. From the lens space in the UI, users can directly access a listing of lens apps in the Windows Phone Store," Microsoft blogged.
The apps using lens feature on WP8 include: "Bing Translator: frame foreign words in the camera viewfinder, and get instant translations; Cam Wow: real-time camera filters and effects; and ReadyClick: use your voice to activate the camera shutter."
Microsoft also released a new Windows Phone 8 app called "Insider app," which allows users to snag cool wallpapers and ringtones each month. The app also features a ringtone archive, live tile support, Bing wallpapers, tips and tricks, and featured apps and games for Windows Phone.
"Users can see the latest posts from the official Windows Phone Blog as well as the ability to record your own ringtone," as Microsoft puts it. "Users can also use fan wallpapers, taken by Windows Phone fans and posted by Microsoft," the company added.
