Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update which is expected to launch over the next few weeks, will not come to many Lumia owners because of increased minimum requirements for the operating system to ensure better performance of the devices.

Back in March, Microsoft had introduced Windows 10 Mobile Update to only about 50 percent of existing Windows Phone model.

Consequently, Anniversary Update would come to only a small number of devices, as we reported last week.

But, a thrid-party tool managed to get the update to older devices as well.

Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update comes to older Lumia Windows phones

A team called DHT at the XDA developers forum has created an app that with just a few tweaks, can install Windows 10 Mobile Build 14393.5 on older Windows Phone devices.

According to the app's official description, "the app will help you get new Redstone update and maybe later upgrades on your old Lumia."

With the team adding saying that the tool supports "all Nokia Lumia devices and all Microsoft Lumia devices except x50 series."

Basically what this app does is "it bypasses the device integrity checks for the upgrade—tricking any Windows Phone model to be identified as Lumia 950 XL single or dual-SIM variant."

That's done, Microsoft's servers believing upgrading supported device, instead provides update to unsupported devices.

For the now, the app don't support phone with 512 MB of RAM, but the developers say an update could be released soon. Additionally, another caveat with this process as of now is "currently it 'only' upgrade a Windows Phone 8.1 device to Windows 10 Mobile."

Since, this is an unsupported process, so of course, it's not risk-free, and obviously if something goes wrong, your device can be bricked.

The installing process involves you to first "make sure you didn't changed your DeviceTargetingInfo keys," after that check you are required to back up your phone "just in case". -Information of your devices will shown up in application

  • Install the app
  • Select your device type variant (Single Sim or Dual-SIM)
  • Tap on "Allow Update", will set the phone to a Lumia 950 XL
  • Now choose your Windows Insider Ring to begin upgradation.
  • Finally, restore your devices backup after upgrade.
