Nielsen Co. research firm released data asserting that Microsoft Bing has become the No. 2 search engine in U.S. market share -- even before combining its traffic with Yahoo under their newly launched partnership. Google still dominates the market, with 65% share of search volume in August. Microsoft now stands at 13.9%, and Yahoo at 13.1% -- down from 14.6% in July, according to Nielsen.

Microsoft's Bing market share has risen sharply from a year ago, when it stood at 10.7% in the Nielsen data.

The Nielsen numbers vary from those released in the past by other research firms, including comScore Networks, but the trends generally hold true across the different data sets.
