A new version 1.2 of the Google+ Hangouts API, and Private Messaging is what Google launched on Firday.
The Hangouts API version 1.1 was launched in May this, today upgraded to version 1.2, which adds a number of significant new features for developers who are building products on top of Google's group video chat service.
All v1.2 features are available immediately (in the sandbox, and in public hangout apps), so you can start building right away.
"A Hangout On Air now defines a broadcaster and the ability for that broadcaster to control which participants can be viewed on air. In a Hangout On Air, an app now has access to the YouTube ID for the recorded video. New functions allow for disposing of audio and image resources from memory, which lets you avoid having the hangout run out of memory and halt," Google noted on the release notes page.
In addition, several new functions are available as general enhancements.
Here is the list of the new features:
- "Add sound effects like a laugh track or applause
- Control which guests in On Air hangouts appear in the video broadcast. This feature was actually used to build the Cameraman app
- Get more information about hangouts, including topic, preferred locale, and the YouTube ID of On Air hangouts
- Manage memory, audio and video resources more efficiently," informs J.D. Salazar, a Google Software Engineer.

In addition to v1.2 of Hangouts API, Google also launched "private messages in Hangouts" as an intern experimental feature.
Now you don't have to pass secret notes under the desk. "If you're in a Hangout with a group of people, but you want to make a comment to just one of them, simply type "/to [their name] [your message]". You don't need to type their full name, just enough so that it's not ambiguous who you mean. Type "/users" to see the nicknames you can use for each person in the Hangout," explains Anthony Tordillos, an intern at Google.
Also, it now easy for you to reply by just clicking the Reply link on a private message and go!
