Google’s cutting edge web services run in warehouses filled with conventional computers. Now, search giant has revealed a new type of machine, called “quantum computer,” that take advantage of laws of quantum physics to provide new computational capabilities. While quantum mechanics has been foundational to theories of physics for about a hundred years picture of reality it paints remains enigmatic. Google gives an e.g. “Assume a ball is hide in a cabinet with million drawers. On average it’ll take you 500,000 peeks to find ball. Now a quantum computer can perform such a search looking only into 1000 drawers.” For hardware, Google is collaborating with D-Wave, a Canadian firm that has developed an on-chip array of quantum bits – or qubits – encoded in magnetically coupled superconducting loops. “At Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS 2009) conference, Google demonstrated a detector that has learned to spot cars by looking at example pictures. It was trained with adiabatic quantum optimization using a D-Wave C4 Chimera chip,” explained Hartmut Neven.
