Last month Google introduced a built-in PDF viewer for Gmail attachments, it seems that Google intends to replace the default “view as HTML” option with a proper application, as the Google Viewer comes with the support for PDF, DOC and PPT attachments. But by default it’s enabled only for PDF files.
Here’s how to open Word documents and PowerPoint presentations in Google Viewer:
- Open an email with a DOC or PPT attachment, or simply search for [has:attachment filename:doc OR filename:ppt].
- Click on “view as HTML” next to the attachement:
- Edit the URL by replacing view=att with view=gvatt.
- Open the page. You’ll be redirected to a page that has the following address:
(X is the number of the attachment, while THREADID is a value that identifies a Gmail thread). Google Viewer automatically generates images for each page of your document, you can zoom in/out, there’s a basic search feature and you can select text.
