Until Microsoft ships Office for Mac 2008 on January 15, the company is offering for free a new edition of the software package to those who buy an earlier edition of Office for Mac 2004.

Those who purchase the 2004 Office for Mac Student and Teacher for $149, the Standard version for $399 or the Standard upgrade for $239 will receive Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition at no cost, save a $6.99 shipping and handling fee.

The Standard flavor includes a single license, while three licenses are included with the less expensive Student and Teacher edition. Microsoft does not verify whether those who buy this education edition really attend or work at a school or university.
