Update 09/30: Foursquare with OpenTable now provide "in-app reservation making at thousands of restaurants across the U.S. and Europe, no phone calls necessary," the company announced today.
"Now when you're searching for the perfect dinner spot with Explore on iPhone or Android, you're just a few taps away from making a reservation."
Tap on the place in Explore that interests you, and, if it's an OpenTable partner, tap the "Make Reservation" button.
Update: Bow, on the latest iPhone or Android apps, you may have noticed a pretty blue box that sometimes appears at the top of your friends tab that takes you straight to the check-in screen for the place you're at. "This make checking in faster, leaving you more time to check out the tips and see if there are any great specials to unlock," 4sq posted. Adding, "We'll only remind you if your phone's been at the same place for awhile, and you can still choose whether or not you want to check in," the company wrote.
As always, "your location is never shared unless you check in. And, if the suggestion isn't right (sorry!), just tap the normal check-in button above it and we'll give you the full list of places to choose from," 4sq added.
Foursqure iPhone app update gets an updated "Explore," with a simpler design, a bunch of new search options, and it's dubbed as a "personalized map made just for you."
Now, "if you type a specific place into Explore, it not only find it for you, but also give you tailored suggestions instead of one size-fits-all results using its data from tens of millions of tips and over 2.5 billion check-ins,": 4sq said.
Today's update to Explorer, also added new search categories that are personalized, too-- and with just one tap, let you find places.
"Fill the map with only places you've been before if you're looking for an old favorite. Or, choose 'Saved' for places you've added to your to-do list. Foursquare shows you insider tips, photos of the place, menus, hours, contact info, and more. It's easy to find the perfect spot."
The new app is also compatible with iPhone 5 and iOS 6.
Also, updated today is a Foursquare Android app, that brought back the option to switch between 'All Activity' and 'Nearby Friends,' so you can easily keep up with friends in your city.
Just tap the options at the bottom of the friends tab to switch between views. The options will disappear as you scroll, and reappear when you scroll back to the top.
In addition, now when you look at a place, you can see which of your friends have been before, how often, and if they've liked or disliked it.
The app also sports a bunch of design tweaks and under-the-hood improvements to keep things fast and intuitive.
Foursquare introduces new "notification settings," to help you keep up with close friends no matter how far they roam. Now, you can choose to receive notifications when they check in, even if they're not nearby or you have all check-in notifications turned off, 4sq posted.
To make sure you always get check-in notifications from close friends, "just go to their profiles on foursquare.com and select "Always On" from the drop down menu," added 4sq.
