DreamSpark Will Now Live On As Microsoft Imagine - Only a Branding Change

Microsoft Imagine replacing DreamSpark. However, program benefits will live on -- No changes have been made to the benefits.

Microsoft's education initiative called "DreamSpark" is now being renamed to Microsoft Imagine.

New to Microsoft Imagine, "It is a initiative for collegiate student developers, especially those who attend top CS universities," "providing them with the tools, resources and experiences needed to turn innovative ideas into reality."

The annoucement made just recently, even though, DreamSpark home page has already been switched to Microsoft Imagine. However, the DreamSpark title will continue and officially retire by the end of Q1 in the 2017 fiscal year, writes Microsoft.

* Microsoft Imagine Standard replaces DreamSpark Standard
* Microsoft Imagine Premium replaces DreamSpark Premium

In addition to the changes in student experience, "institutions will also see changes," but will continue to enjoy the same levels of access as previously.

As company noted, Microsoft Imagine will be "the primary way for schools to put professional developer tools and software in the hands of your faculty and students with a low-cost subscription from Microsoft."

Microsoft Imagine replaces DreamSpark

Program Administrators will also experience a new look and user interface. The new UI will enable admins easier access accounts, setting up school's Webstores, and more.

According to company new Microsoft Imagine Premium offer will include all Windows operating system and all editions of Visual Studio. While Imagine Standard contains just the professional editions of the following products (verbatim):

  • Visual Studio 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015 Professional Editions
  • Visual Studio LightSwitch 2011
  • Expression Studio 4 Ultimate (became a free product as of 2013, discontinued)
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2014
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2012
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition 32-bit
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition 64-bit
  • Windows Server 2012 Datacenter and Standard Editions 64-bit
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter and Standard Editions 64-bit
  • Windows Embedded CE 6.0
  • Windows Embedded Standard 7
  • Windows Embedded 8 Industry Pro
  • Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro, microsoft noted.
