Windows Thin PC (WinTPC), allows users to repurpose their older PCs as thin clients. “Windows Thin PC helps reduce the cost of VDI at the endpoint, enabling IT with an enterprise ready platform to provide end users with an excellent thin client experience through the many unique features offered on their repurposed PCs.”
Users running the latest iteration of Windows 7 for thin clients can now add couple of new features from Microsoft Download Center such as: Enhanced Write Filter Management Tool for Windows Thin PC and the File Based Write Filter Management Tool for Windows Thin PC.
The “File Based Write Filter Management Tool” for Windows Thin PC provides an application to monitor and configure the “File Based Write Filter (FBWF)”.
And, the “Enhanced Write Filter Management Tool” for Windows Thin PC provides an application to monitor and configure the “Enhanced Write Filter (EWF)”.
“By default the application will start on system start and will register a notification area icon. The settings, however, allow suppressing the automatic starting,” reveals Microsoft.
“The tool can be started with a command line parameter to open either the overview dialog or (for users with administrative privileges) the configuration dialog. If the tool is started with a command line parameter, the tool will exit as soon as the respective dialog is closed.”
“If the tool has registered a tray icon, hovering over the icon will show a tooltip containing the protected volumes. If a command is pending for a volume, it’ll be shown as well. Left-clicking on the icon or selecting “Status…” from its context menu opens the overview dialog with more detailed information about the file based write filter configuration. Users with administrative privileges or credentials can open the configuration dialog by selecting “Configure…” from the icons context menu,” the Redmond company said.
