A mechanical engineer from the Netherlands, Jarnos Smeets is working hard to build “real-life wings” for the human beign to fly. By combining the accelerometers of the WiiMote and an HTC Wildfire S, he can now measure the arm-speed of his own movements and thus control the outrunner motors on his DIY wings.
Smeets notes “I tested the flapping of the wings with the electronic mechanism with the controllers (see below). And the result is fantastic. It works! This means that I can fully control the wings with my arms now and can try flying soon. Some time ago I connected the acceleration sensors of the HTC and Wii Remote (check video nr. 6 & 7). The next step was to send this acceleration data to my ESC’s and outrunners.
Floor and me went testing the system yesterday, watch the result below. I’m very proud of this. It’s a photogallery on the elements we worked on plus the video to prove it.
Also decided to attach an earlier sketch of the system, although it’s kind of a wild sketch, I think this explains what I did and how it works.
This all means that i can control the wings with my arms and manage the flapping movements to fly!,” said Smeets.
