Chrome Frame -- a secure plug-in created by Google and released in 2009, brings the ability in Internet Explorer that loads pages using Chrome's rendering engine of the web page requests.

In short, Chrome Frame provided a modern engine to Internet Explorer 8 (and other older versions) lacking HTML5 -- to allow developers to bring better experiences to more users, even those who were unable to move to a more capable browser.

"With Google Chrome Frame, developers can now take advantage of the latest open web technologies, even in Internet Explorer. From a faster Javascript engine, to support for current web technologies like HTML5's offline capabilities and <canvas>, to modern CSS/Layout handling, Google Chrome Frame enables these features within IE with no additional coding or testing for different browser versions," explained Google back then.

As most people are now using modern browsers that support the majority of the latest web technologies, while the usage of legacy browsers is declining significantly and newer browsers stay up to date automatically. Chrome Frame is no longer useful, thus Google announced to discontinue it and "cease support and updates for the product in January 2014".

"Given these factors we've decided to retire Chrome Frame, and will cease support and updates for the product in January 2014," Google stated.
