Sony appear to have gone one better than Microsoft’s bundling of King Kong with their external HD-DVD player for the Xbox 360, instead offering the first 500,000 purchasers of the PAL PlayStation 3 who register on the PlayStation Network a free copy of Casino Royale on Blu-ray.
Sony reckon this could be the coup they need to help deliver people to Blu-ray, rather than rival format HD-DVD, which is heavily backed by Microsoft. The PlayStation Network also delivers console updates, online gaming and downloadable titles, and is therefore key to the PS3’s ultimate success.
“Casino Royale not only makes the most of the features and capabilities of the Blu-ray format, but is one of the most exciting and entertaining movies to debut on Blu-ray this year,” Sony’s Darren Carter enthused.
Sony will be hoping that the new movie, which comes in 1080p resolution on one of the 50GB Blue-ray discs, will help persuade people of the format’s overall merits. In North America, the first 400,000 purchasers were offered Talladega Nights on Blu-ray. The console launches in PAL regions come March 23rd. More soon.
