GENIVI Alliance, have chosen "MeeGo" for their next reference release of In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI). GENIVI Alliance a non-profit industry alliance whose founding members include BMW Group, Delphi, GM, Intel, Magneti-Marelli, PSA, Visteon and Wind River, was founded with a goal of establishing Linux operating system, middleware and platform for automotive in-vehicle infotainment industry.
"MeeGo is a mobile operating system built from Intel's Moblin OS and Nokia's Maemo OS with Debian as the base. The operating system is intended to work on mobile devices such as netbooks, smart-phones and IVI devices."
Jim Zemlin, at The Linux Foundation said, "We're pleased to see GENIVI choose MeeGo to power their software platform. MeeGo has been built up for these types of apps. Because MeeGo is a truly open platform, the work GENIVI will do to extend the platform can benefit the project and all who use it. For developers, this's a great opportunity to harness the power of MeeGo APIs to target a variety of devices and architectures and extend their work on handset applications toward vehicles."
