The Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism released the results of a year-long study of the penetration of certain companies in the headlines of 52 tech news outlets. Apple came in with 15.1% of articles, Google grabbed 11.4%, and Microsoft underwhelmed the competition with a mere 3%. While Apple dominated the news media in general, the top story of the year can’t be attributed to one company. The controversy over texting while driving, its legislation and discussion, was the most popular topic, according to the study.
The top stories show that tech interests are split between making life easier through innovation and fearing the idea that innovation will make changes in our lives that we aren’t very comfortable with, specifically in the domains of privacy and safety.
