App Store Hits 25 Billion Downloads; Opens Amsterdam Retail Store

Apple’s iTunes App Store, which was launched in July 2008, on early March 3 morning (EST zone), has hit 25 Billion download’s milestone (i.e. almost 4 apps for every human on the planet!), by the users of the more than 315 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices worldwide.

The 25 billionth app downloaded, Where’s My Water? Free, was downloaded by Chunli Fu of Qingdao, China. As the winner of the App Store Countdown to 25 Billion Apps, Chunli Fu will receive a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card.

The App Store, first reached the 1 billion app download mark in April 2009. And, passed the 10 billionth app mark on January 22, 2011.

“The iTunes App Store offers more than 550,000 apps to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users in 123 countries around the world, with more than 170,000 native iPad apps available. App Store customers can choose from an incredible range of apps in 21 categories, including Newsstand, games, business, news, sports, health & fitness and travel. The App Store has paid out more than four billion dollars to developers,” posted Apple.

In other Apple news, Apple has opened the doors today of its new flagship retail location on the ground floor and mezzanine of the Hirsch building at the Leidseplein in Amsterdam.

The store will accomodate 300 employees who can serve customers in 14 languages, and features the world’s longest Genius Bar at 20 meters long with 34 stools. You will even find a Briefing Room and EasyPay self-checkout for accessories through the Apple Store app.

Apple is also gearing up to launch a outlet in London’s world-famous Harrods department store by mid-March.

Apple is ready to open new retail outlets in the United States and overseas — per the report Apple now plans to build four new stores, including an outlet in Houston’s Highland Village Shopping center at Westheimer and Drexel, and a spectacular store at the old Saks space in downtown Portland, Ore.

The document embedded below giving a glimpse into the project description and drawings and the ground-floor plan reveals that Plaza steps are planned and the entire store is slated at 165 feet wide with 22 glass panels.
