Android 7.1 Nougat Developer Preview, an incremental update based on Android 7.0 with new features aimed at consumers and developers is coming late this month.
With this open developer preview, you'll be able to test and build on the new platform while trying out latest features as it comes included with added support for "platform Daydream VR, A/B system updates, app shortcuts, and image keyboard."
As always, developer preview will be available through the Android Beta program.
Here is what's new in this incremental Android 7.1 release:
Android 7.1 offer a variety of optimizations and bug fixes, features, and new APIs "level 25". And, for developers, it adds new capabilities such as:
- App shortcuts API lets you create up to 5 shortcuts, either statically or dynamically, You can surface key actions directly in the launcher for taking users deep into your app instantly.
- Image keyboard support lets apps tell the keyboard about the types of content they accept, so users can enter more contents such as "custom stickers, animated gifs, and more" through keyboard. For broad compatibility, this API will also be available in the support library, google said.
- Circular app icons support that match the look of Pixel and other launchers.
Enhanced live wallpaper metadata for any picker that display the wallpapers as a preview. The metadata such as label, description, and author, as well as a new context URL and title to link to more information can be provided.
- Storage manager Intent allow an app take user directly to a new Settings screen to clear unused files and free up storage space on the device.
The new 7.1 platform also includes APIs that support "multi-endpoint calling and new telephony configuration options" for carriers and calling apps.
Google notes, Developer Preview will be initially available for Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and Pixel C devices. And, in early December with Android 7.1.x final release, they'll extend to other supported devices including "Nexus 6, 5X, 6P, 9, Player, Pixel C, and Android One devices, as well as Pixel and Pixel XL devices," writes Android team.
Those who have previously enrolled a device for previews, will receive the update automaticall. And, if you are new, to receive the Developer Preview automatically, enroll your device with Android Beta.
