Google Adds Street View Panoramas of the Eiffel Tower

Google Maps Street View capture panoramic imagery of the most visited monument globally the Eiffel Tower, Paris.

You can now scale the Eiffel Tower's 1710 steps virtually with the new Google Maps Street View imagery of the monument and take in the views of the City of Light.

Additionally, you can also learn more about the birth of the Eiffel Tower, its construction and inauguration in three new online exhibitions which blend fascinating historical material with a sprinkling of technological magic from the Google Cultural Institute and and the Eiffel Tower Operating Company.

Paris' iconic Eiffel Tower was constructed in 1889, and since more than 250 million people have visited the highest monument in the world for more than 40 years. The title "highest monumnet" is now held by Burj Khalifa in Dubai. However, the Eiffel Tower still remains the most visited monument globally.

Google explains to capture the imagery, the Street View team followed in the footsteps of 7 million annual visitors and ascended multiple floors of the Tower. Using the Street View Trolley (designed especially for monuments and museums) they filmed 360-degree views of the monument's architecture and its views over Paris.

"These modern-day Street View panoramas sit alongside nearly 50 archival images, plans, engravings and photos telling the story of the Eiffel Tower's development and social impact in the 19th century," google added. Some of the archive material is quite rare and precious such as a recording of Gustave Eiffel's voice by Thomas Edison.

If you've not yet visited it, but ever wondered what the view is like from above the City of Light, you can now do it from the comfort of your couch:
