Nokia Lumia 1020, boasting a second generation 41 megapixel camera reinvents zoom, enabling people to discover more detail than the eye can see arrives.

The Lumia 1020, said Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, was designed to "firmly establish Nokia as the leader in mobile imaging."

The Windows Phone 8 smartphone has a 4.5 inch AMOLED screen (1280 x 768 pixels, 15:9 aspect ratio) made with Gorilla Glass 3, 2GB of RAM, powered by a 1.5 Ghz dual-core S4 (Snapdragon) processor, and 32 GB internal memory.

Nokia is also releasing their own Camera app to accommodate the many options the new 41MP camera offers.

Nokia Pro Camera app is designed to take advantage of the phone's record-setting image sensor and make it easy for anybody to shoot, edit, and share pro-quality photos and video. Pros can also use it to manually adjust flash, focus, ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure, and other key settings.

Lumia 1020 creates two images every time you press the camera button in Nokia Pro Camera--a super high-res version for editing and archiving, and an oversampled 5-megapixel copy for easy sharing via email or social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.

The 6-lens Ziess camera can shoot images at 38-megapixels. It also features a maximum 7712 x 5360 resolution, and there's a xenon flash for stills, a LED flash for video, and a 1.2 megapixel wide-angle front-facing camera for HD chats.

The Lumia 1020 records HD video in 1080p at 30 frames per second and lets you zoom in up to four times closer to the action with no loss of quality (up to 6x closer in HD 720p).

In conjunction with the announcement of the new Lumia 1020, Nokia also introduced a new Imaging SDK to help developers take full advantage of some of Nokia's leading imaging technology.

"The new SDK is a native Windows Phone 8 library that you can use in any of your new or existing Windows Phone 8 projects," says Nokia. With Imaging SDK, developers can create apps that would work specifically with the new, high-end Lumia camera. Early partners include Yelp, Path, Oggl and Foursquare -- but still no Instagram.

The new SDK is simple and offers a number of filters and imaging processing effects to your app in no time. "The level of abstraction in the SDK is remarkable."

Devs can get the SDK here.

Nokia today also unveiled the Nokia Camera Grip, a multipurpose accessory that helps further blur the line between smartphones and high-end cameras.

Expected to go on sale this month, it features an ergonomic bumped out grip on the side like DSLRs have, a universal tripod mount, and extra battery power.

Lumia 1020 comes in yellow, white, and black--will initially debut at AT&T for $299.99 with a two-year contract--with online preorders kicks off on July 16.

The phone, which runs on the carrier's 4G LTE network, officially goes on sale July 26.

China and select European countries should get it later in the year, Nokia said.

Als,o Lumia 925 will be available starting July 17 for $49.99 down with 24 equal monthly payments of $20.

The phone is the first Lumia model to incorporate metal into the design and also the first Windows Phone for T-Mobile's 4G LTE network.

Update 07/12: In a Q&A, Windows Phone vp Joe Belfiore, along with Nokia's svp Kevin Shields, discussed about the collaboration between the two companies and the role Windows Phone played in the development of the Lumia 1020's impressive 41-megapixel camera.

Belfiore says that "Microsoft collaborates with all of their Windows Phone partners extensively," adding that it is "unique across companies and not something I think you see Google doing with Android."

As far as the Lumia 1020 was concerned, Belfiore said: "So we spent time together working on the architecture so the 1020 camera can capture two images at once--a super high-res shot and an oversampled 5-megapixel version for easier sharing. And we shared early builds of software and hardware so we could give each other feedback on the work in progress--I think I wrote more than 10 pages of feedback myself on the Nokia Pro Camera app as it was being developed."

He added that Microsoft actually added some code to Windows Phone 8 to improve the zoom features on its photo viewer so it would work better on the Lumia 1020. Microsoft and Nokia also have some future Windows Phone plans in the works, with Shields saying, " ... as amazing as this is, we still have some stuff up our sleeves. We're not gonna sit still."

Below are some official Nokia Lumia 1020 videos that put spolight several features. This videos itself was shot with the Lumia 1020 and with its audio recorded with the camera's external microphones at the New York City press conference.

This clip shows the presenter as he demos the pro camera software inside the Lumia 1020 along with its zoom features.

This video shows a trio of people walking around and taking pictures with the Lumia 1020, using its zoom capabilities to get close-up images.

In this video, a tourist taking pictures with the camera while she walks around a European city uses the Pro Camera. Nokia has confirmed to bringing this software to other Lumia 92x family in a future firmware update.

The video puts the spotlight on sound, specifically when recording video with the Lumia 1020's camera which Nokia claims is far better than what the 'normal' smartphone allows.
