This Thursday 4th of July, celebrate the American independence with Mix Party, a new web experinece from the Internet Explorer and Nokia Music, where people at your party can sync their smartphones to the playlist and vote on the tracks they want to hear next.

"Well the web today is built for one device at a time, but soon all the websites will begin to offer a seamless connected experience across the devices. We call that the Companion Web. And that's what we're trying to show with Mix Party! Regardless of whether you're using a Windows Phone, iPhone, or Android phone, all you need is a modern web browser on your phone and you can connect to a Mix Party playlist. Well, that and an Xbox," the IE team wrote.

Here's how it works: "

  • You need an Xbox. Turn it on, fire up Internet Explorer in the apps, and type in this Web address: mixparty.nokia.com
  • Pick three artists and start your party playlist.
  • Anyone at your party with a smartphone can scan the QR code and sync with the playlist, then vote on the artist they want to hear next. The track with the most votes wins," explains the team.

In other Microsoft news today, co-founder and chairman Bill Gates will be keynoting the upcoming annual Microsoft Research Faculty Summit on 9 a.m. PT July 15 and 16, in Redmond, Washington.

"Delivering the opening keynote will be Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates in his first such appearance since 2005. Gates will address the role of computing in solving global problems, and then take questions from the in-person audience and online viewers," Microsoft stated.

In the new Garage Series for Office 365 episode, the Office team discuss the latest in eDiscovery and Data Loss Prevention.

Episode 3 filmed in New Orleans, share an overview of the latest in integrated Enterprise Search, eDiscovery and Data Loss Prevention to harden your data protection. "See how these technologies work across both Office 365 Cloud implementations and your on-premises Office stack to help save users and organizations proactively and reactively from themselves while helping to reduce the complexity of discovery and high costs of legal review due to compliance audits," the team wrote.

The Access 2013 Runtime is now available for download in 38 languages. "Microsoft Access 2013 provides a rich platform for developing database management solutions with easy-to-use customization tools. If no end user customization is required (including report modifications), you can choose to distribute those Access 2013 solutions so that they run without requiring a full installation of Access 2013. To do so, you must package and distribute your application with the Access 2013 Runtime," Microsoft explains.

Web-based apps for SharePoint that are built with Access 2013 do not require a runtime--only a supported web browser is required.

Also, with the Windows 8.1Preview and Windows Server 2012 R2Preview now available, and that brings the updates to Windows PowerShell and other management tools as well as a new features called "Windows PowerShell Desired State Configuration."

Microsoft today released Windows Management Framework (WMF) 4.0 Preview, which will make this updated functionality in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 available on older operating systems.

"WMF 4.0 Preview contains updated functionality available for installation on Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1, and Windows Server 2012. Note that WMF 4.0 Preview does not install on Windows 8. However, you can obtain the updated functionality included in WMF 4.0 by installing Windows 8.1 which is available as a free update for Windows 8," explains Microsoft.

WMF 4.0 Preview contains updated versions of the following features: "

  • Windows PowerShell
  • Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE)
  • Windows PowerShell Web Services (Management OData IIS Extension)
  • Windows Remote Management (WinRM)
  • Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)
  • Windows PowerShell Desired State Configuration (DSC)."
