Microsoft June 2013 security update addressed 23 vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows, Office and Internet Explorer. Rolls out Surface RT and Surface Pro fixes--and Windows Server 2012 Essentials Update Rollup 2.

Update Rollup 2 for Windows Server 2012 Essentials has been released and is now available for download from Microsoft Update.

"The client-side package for this update rollup is installed on all client computers automatically after you apply this update rollup. The Update Rollup 2 client-side package is same as the existing Update Rollup 1 client-side package KB2781268," Microsoft stated.

Microsoft's June 2013 Patch Tuesday rolled out security updates for Windows operating systems including "Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows RT."

Of the five bulletins released today, MS13-047 labeled as Critical, and addressed the security glitches in Internet Explorer browser.

One of the Important updates deals with Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 3 and Microsoft Office for Mac 2011. "These updates address remote code execution, elevation of privilege, information disclosure, and denial of service vulnerabilities."

MS13-051 addressed remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft Office 2003 and Office for Mac 2011.

Also, Microsoft released a new update through Security Advisory 2854544, which builds on automatically update the Certificate Trust List (CTL) functionality, and that gives enterprise customers more options for managing private public key infrastructure (PKI) environments.

This functionality, initially "built into Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 and Windows RT, is now available for Windows Vista through Windows 7," MSRC blog wrote.

Adding, over the coming months, it'll be rolling out additional updates to this advisory - "all aimed at bolstering Windows' cryptography and certificate-handling infrastructure."

Aside from security updates, Microsoft also released June 2013 firmware updates for Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets.

"Cumulative firmware and drivers for the Surface Pro. This firmware and driver package contains drivers for all of the components in the Surface Pro device, as well as updates to the system firmware that have been released via Windows Update. These drivers and firmware are not compatible with Surface RT," microsoft stated.

For ARM-based Surface RTs:

  • Surface Home Button driver update that the company says will improve the reliability of the devices waking up immediately on the first button press.
  • Recently disclosed firmware update for Surface Type Cover and Surface Touch Cover aiming to improve functionality for both accessories. Includes the ability to toggle function keys, new shortcuts, and new keyboard navigation improvements.

  • LifeCam driver that aims to enhance clarity for low light operation and improves reliability when switching between the integrated camera and an external camera.
