Office Web Apps Rolling Real-time Co-authoring, Better Android Support

Updated PowerPoint Web App brings co-authoring experience, rolling out to Office Web Apps in the next few months alongwith Edit from Android tablets.

Office Web Apps, is set to get some cool updates over the next year and beyond. The feature mentioned below are expected to arrive within "the next few months."

In addition, Microsoft is also working on a "Gemini" update, which according to report is set to bring full Metro-style versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to the Windows Store.

The upcoming updates to Office Web Apps include:

  • Real-time co-authoring in Office Web Apps will let file authors will automatically see presence and edits from others as they happen without needing to refresh. In essence, you will no longer need to refresh when engaged in co-authoring with this new update.

    Microsoft started to deliver this in the PowerPoint Web App where users can now see each other's changes almost immediately. In the next few months you'll see PowerPoint Web App co-authoring get even faster and real time co-authoring support in the other Office Web Apps.

  • Android support. The full power of the Office Web Apps is already available for Windows 8 tablets and iPads, Microsoft now extending the same capabilities to Android tablets via mobile Chrome browser support.

Other enhancements that Microsoft is bringing to Office Web Apps, including support for the "find and replace" feature in Word Web App, as well as speeding up load times and making file management simpler.
