In other Microsoft products news, Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) November '12 released now available added "Weelsof" malware

"Win32/Weelsof is part of a large malware family called ransomware, which is different from your traditional trojans and worms. Ransomware's main goal is to financially benefit from every infected user and force them to pay," informs MSRT.

"The user can be infected by this malware by visiting a compromised or malicious website. The website may have been compromised by exploits or injected iframes. Once the malware binary is download and executed, it will connect to a server where it will download the "scare page" setup and configuration that will be used for ransom purposes. Once the malware decrypts the file, it will become a ZIP file that contains the ransomware's scare page setup. Once decrypted, the malware will extract the archive and get the scare page's contents," MSRT explains.

It is composed of the following three stages:

  • "Download of the scare page - this is an encrypted data file that uses RC4 encryption, retrieved with https://<malicious domain>/<random number>/get_dsn.php
  • Confirmation of location - The ransomware retrieves the geo-location of the machine, with https://<malicious domain>/<random number>/get_coce.php
  • Confirmation of IP address - The ransomware gets the IP address of the infected machine, with https://<malicious domain>/<random number>/get.php"

The malware will then lock the screen, rendering it unusable for users, as shown in the picture below:

Microsoft in a blog post revealed that Windows 8 App install package (APPX) is based on the popular compression file extension "ZIP format."

Although the company currently uses the Windows 8 APPX (.appx) app package format, it all comes down to ZIP, as Microsoft needed "a simple but popular starting base."

"The new APPX package format for Windows Store apps employs innovative technologies to make app packaging simple and secure," Microsoft said.

"These packages take advantage of the standards based OPC format and are easy to create using either Visual Studio Express 2012 or the standalone MakeAppx tool to make packaging your app simple. By using digital signatures we can ensure that each package is valid and your end-users are secure," the company explained.
