Microsoft kicked off Windows 8 global launch starting with China and today the company started its global advertising campaign in a total of 42 countries -- which is termed as the "largest advertising campaigns ever" with a final budget of about $2 billion.

The company posted four TV commercials. This time however, Microsoft decided to go for a variety of indie and up and coming bands across the globe, not because they would be cheaper, but because it "wanted to bring the viewer on a journey of discovery," as Rob Reilly, partner/worldwide chief creative officer, Crispin, Porter and Bogusky, explained.

"And we didn't get too literal. It's not about landing features and scenarios, it is about themes like sharing and staying connected, working and playing together, and expressing yourself. They are what connect and resonate across cultures in this digital and social age and what is absolutely core to this product."

Microsoft also revealed that they will take over 39 digital billboards in Times Square and showcase the biggest Start Screen ever, in yet another marketing campaign for the company's Windows 8 operating system.

"If you are in New York on October 25 thru the 27th don't miss Times Square where Windows 8 will be featured on over 39 digital boards in the largest takeover of Times Square to date--the biggest Start Screen ever!" Microsoft stated.

On top of showcasing the largest Start Screen ever, Microsoft will also host a hands-on experience with Windows 8 at Times Square in New York as well as numerous Microsoft Stores around North America. Microsoft may even showcase you trying out Windows 8 on the large billboard in Times Square!

In another video, Microsoft showcases the making of the Touch Cover for Surface. "The Touch Cover, is 3mm thin and pressure sensitive, is not only a cover, but also a keyboard."

In another video, Microsoft showcases "Microtropolis" at Pier 57, is an immersive and interactive 160-foot "mini" Manhattan - where the neighborhoods are represented through Windows 8 touch-enabled PCs and devices.

New Yorkers can stop by and walk right into the experience through the avenues and streets. Hundreds of devices are scattered along the rooftops within the neighborhoods.

"We partnered with local artists, chefs, designers and other notable New Yorkers to curate their respective neighborhood experiences within the Windows 8 for all the devices within Microtropolis," Microsoft stated.

Microtropolis is Manhattan experienced through Windows. It creates the ultimate hands-on demonstration of Windows 8, with the city of NYC as the backdrop," Microsoft stated.

According to the website, this takes place October 26th (the release date of Windows 8) until November 3rd at the Hudson River Parks in New York.
