Firefox for Windows 8 will include a new Metro style Start Page, support for Firefox Sync, Metro touch and swipe gestures, integration with Windows 8 "charms" and a new interface.

"Over the coming weeks and months, we'll be adding more features, tightening up Windows integration, improving performance and responsiveness, and finishing up all the necessary work to deliver a first class Firefox experience for Windows 8," Mozilla blogged.

Early adopters, can see the steps below to install correctly this preview release."Keep in mind that the browser is still in development so features may be missing, and is unstable.

  • Download"Nightly build of"Firefox Metro,"run the .exe file, and"go"to the"Firefox\metro\install folder.
  • Double click "zipbuildsetup” and click "Run,”"a""Command Prompt” window appear and"automatically close after a few seconds.
  • Now, go the""install” folder, click on the""registerbrowser” file and wait as it"modify the Windows 8 registry,"a confirmation message should appear when the process is completed.
  • Again, in the "install” folder, clicking""createshortcut” file"adds the Firefox Nightly shortcut in the Start Screen and will allow you to launch the browser in Metro mode. If you are asked for"a file called "msvcr110.dll,” Google it and"download to your install folder.
  • That's it.

Microsoft sends out invites for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 launch events scheduled on October 26 in New York City and October 29 2012 in San Francisco respectively.

The invite also mention that a "Surface Reception" will also take place on the day Oct 26.

To celebrate, "we have several events taking place in cities all around the world. Since BUILD a year ago, there have been more than 750 Windows developer events held in over 50 countries worldwide - and more than 200,000 developers have attended those events," Microsoft blogged, adding, "a coding marathon held in Bangalore, India - set the Guinness World Record for Most Participants in a Software Development Marathon in One Location with 2,567 developers coding non-stop for 18 hours."

"Windows 8 has been downloaded and used by more people than Windows 7 during the same period. A billion hours of feedback telemetry has been collected from all our pre-releases combined. ," Microsoft posted.

"Our OEM channel has been hard at work preparing over 800 unique systems that have now been certified specifically for Windows 8 and Windows RT," the Redmond company adds.

Also, the company announced today that the built in Windows 8 apps would be getting updates. In the blog post, Microsoft said it will be rolling out Windows 8 apps updates between sometime in the "near future until Windows 8 General Availability (GA) on October 26th."

The Windows 8 apps that are due to be updated include Bing, SkyDrive, Mail / Calendar / People / and Messaging, Photos, Maps, Finance, News, Sports, Travel, Weather, Video, Music, and Games.

Highlights include IMAP support coming for the Mail app, Search within SkyDrive (no info about selective sync), Bird's eye view and indoor venue maps in Bing Maps, Bing Rewards, New York Times and Wall St. Journal content in News, "expanded music services" in Music, and more (see under this post).

Microsoft is also holding a event in San Francisco on October 29 where the company will be officially launching Windows Phone 8.

October 29th will NOT be the day you can purchase a Windows Phone 8 device, instead, it will be the day we all learn exactly what features Windows Phone 8 will have.

And, noted that AT&T's going to sell the Nokia Lumia 920-the U.S. telecom company announced that the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 are officially part of the carrier's fall lineup. And, that "you're going to be able to get the Lumia 920 in-store in Red, Black and White, and through direct order (i.e., online) in Yellow and Cyan."

In other WP8 news, Microsoft shared a video tipping about what makes an app design good or bad and how to make it better.

In the video, a Windows Phone designer Jon Bell, explains Microsoft's design team's philosophy of "fierce reduction" and how to make the best use of animation, pivots, and other hallmark Windows Phone visual elements.

And, finally, Windows Phone 8 which was until now under wraps, has now been demonstrated running on a HTC 8X Windows Phone 8, revealing a bunch of new and old features including: "Bing lockscreen wallpapers, a new Office 2013 app, offline maps, Kids Room and more."

  • Lock Screen Wallpaper auto-updater: Bing, Photo and now we see HTC will have their own Wallpaper service
  • Download new keyboard languages - here you can see it in action, including Arabic keyboard support.
  • HTC 8X camera in action with the zippy ImageChip
  • Maps - now has a downloadable, offline option (you can also check for map updates for those offline caches)
  • Family Room gets glossed over in the People Hub
  • Office 13 - we finally get to see what the new Office Hub looks like. It's basically much cleaner looking with less focus on Tiles
