Google opened Google+ API to its in-house non-mainstream community product "Orkut." Originally hosted in California, Google launched "Orkut," it first social networking service back in August 2008, and announced that Orkut would be fully managed and operated in and by Google Brazil.

The service was named after its creator, a Googler Orkut Büyükkökten -- and was designed to help users meet new and old friends and maintain existing relationships.

Although Orkut is less popular in the United States, Google's Orkut team continues to roll out new features ocassionally.

For sure Google will sunset Orkut in the coming days, as the Google+ is already picking up, and mainting Orkut definitely is a distraction for Google. But, Google wants a seamless transition of Orkut to Google+ --to this end, Google recently launched some new features introducing Google+ integration to all Orkut users.

Here are some of the Google+ features:

Orkut and Google+ profile linking

First, Orkut users who have profiles on Google+, can now easily share their updates with their Orkut friends by linking Google+ and orkut profiles. After you link your profiles, "your Orkut profile photo and name will be the same as your Google+ photo and name." As a result, linking your profiles will also make it easier for your Orkut friends to find you on Google+.

Of course, linking your Orkut and Google+ profiles is optional, even after you link them, you can decide if you want to share your public posts with your Orkut friends or not just by accessing your Orkut settings.

In addition, you'll be able to share all your public Google+ posts with your Orkut friends.

"Your Google+ posts to limited audience or specific circles will remain on Google+ only and will be subject to your privacy settings," Google said.

Once you link your profiles, your upgraded Orkut profiles will feature the same cover photo of your Google+ public profile and will enable you to further express your interests, personality and style.

In addition, your latest Google+ photos can be posted to a album which makes it easier for your Orkut friends to see your latest snapshots.

Another new feature that brings G+ to Orkut, is the new "Google Toolbar for Orkut," which is highly integrated with Google+ and "allows you to check your Google+ notifications, reply to any comment on your Google+ profile and share new content with your Google+ circles while you are on Orkut."

In additon, with new Google Bar in Orkut, you can also use the Google+ share box to post to your Google+ circle.

Google Toolbar for Orkut offers following new features: (Note, available "onle" if your Orkut and Google+ profiles are linked)

  • Easy search access on Orkut: Search from any Orkut page

Also, a new feature called "You might like on Google+" show you Google+ pages and profiles that may interest you and the "suggestions are based on your Google+ circles and your Orkut friends."

"If the "You might like on Google+" feature doesn't appear on your profile it's because we need an "extra push" to determine your interests," Google said. Just circle some new people on Google+ and the suggestions will come!

post to Orkut and Google+ at the same time

The most notable feature in the G+ and Orkut integration is the ability to "post to Orkut and Google+ at the same time."

All you required is to make sure you have linked your Orkut and Google+ account, to automatically share your public Google+ posts to Orkut.

To enable that, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to Orkut settings, under the gear icon.
  2. Click on the Google+ tab.
  3. Select the box "If I share a post on Google+ publicly, also post it on Orkut".
  4. Your Orkut stream will look like this

Also, to help Orkut user decorate their home page with a clean appearance and greater emphasis on content, Google introduced some new Patterns.
