Microsoft Details 'Read Mode' in Word 2013, SharePoint 2013 Sharing, Profiles, Privacy, and Search

Microsoft Office 2013 comes with a "Read Mode" that is designed from the ground up with the unique aspects of reading in mind. "Just as Word already helps people create and share information, the new Word makes consuming those documents on any screen a great experience," Microsoft stated.

The new Reading Mode essentially turns your Word documents into an interactive digital magazine.

"When you open a document in Read Mode, you'll immediately notice that we've minimized the application UI as much as possible. When you read, the UI can be a distraction. Our goal was to eliminate distractions so the content had your full attention," explained Tristan Davis, Senior Program Manager Lead, Word.

Microsoft explains they've also enabled the use of Office's new full-screen mode in this view, so you can hide all of the application UI if you prefer, and dedicate the entire screen to whatever you're reading; however, that's a choice you can make independently of choosing to read the document in Read Mode.

The Read Mode is designed to be a fast and fluid experience on touch devices. When reading documents on a tablet, for example, "you can effortlessly pan from one screen to the next, easily navigating the document with the flick of your finger. Even tapping on the edges of the screen smoothly animates the transition from one section to the next, allowing you to comfortably hold a tablet device and read, without having to move your hand each time you want to turn the page," Davis explained.

In addition, the Navigation pane has been optimized to ensure that you can easily use it to navigate between the various headings in your document with a single tap -- just pan right or left or use your keyboard up/down or left/right buttons.

Microsoft included new reference tools in Word 2013 to assist users -- allows you to quickly look up words in the dictionary, quickly translate text into the language of your choice, and search on Bing.

Microsoft also included a simplified view of revisions called "Simple Markup," using hints to show you where comments are in your document, etc.

SharePoint 2013 Site Sharing, And Document Sharing Explained

In another blog post, Microsoft explained how sharing is simplified in SharePoint 2013, stating, "Sharing a site is simple in the new version of SharePoint. On every page of the site, there's a "Share" button in the top right corner. Just click on it, type in names of people you want to share with, and hit enter."

"SharePoint still uses powerful concepts like permission levels, groups and inheritance to provide this experience, but you don't have to understand those concepts anymore to accomplish everyday tasks like sharing a site," Microsoft adds.

"The people you just shared with will get an email invitation with a link to the site. If you're using Office 365, you can invite people outside your company. Just type in their email addresses, and they too will get an invitation," Microsoft explained.

And, to see who is already on this site, you can check under the "Settings" menu in top right corner, click on "Shared with" and you'll see the names and pictures of people who have access to the site.

To share a single document -- just upload that to SkyDrive Pro -- wen you're ready to share, click on the "Lock" icon next to the document, and then "Invite People", type in names and hit enter. As you invite people, the "Lock" icon now changes to indicate that document is shared.

You can also share individual documents within a site by selecting "Share" on the document callout.

When you "share a document with people outside your organization, by default, they need to sign in with a free Microsoft Account (formerly known as a Live ID). But if you uncheck the "Require sign-in" option, they won't have to sign-in," explained Microsoft.

In the new version of SharePoint, "when you try to visit a site or a document that's not shared with you, you're no longer stuck. Instead, you can explain why you need access, sending a notification to the site owner. Once the owner approves your request, you'll be notified by email," Microsoft adds.

Microsoft also detailed the Profiles, Privacy and Search in new SharePont 2013.

The new Sharpoint 2013 profiles help people learn more about them, follow him, and stay connected.

"Sharing who you are, your expertise, skills, and interests helps others find you when they need to get their job done. If you're looking for someone with technical knowledge of a specific subject, you can search for that topic and find the right person to answer your question. And, it's a great way to meet others at your organization, especially when you work hundreds of miles away with thousands of other people."

To get started, fill out the About Me section, so that people can read your bio front and center on your profile. Then add key areas or topics to Ask Me About, Interests, and other areas of your profile, which help people find you more easily. Your profile contains much more, so fill out as much as possible!

Private is the default. "If you travel around on SharePoint, follow people or documents, post in a community, etc. all of those activities will not appear in the newsfeed. You don't have to worry about sharing something that wasn't meant to be shared. Your privacy settings, which are located on the "Newsfeed Settings" section of your profile, are broken into two parts: People and Activities."

"When the "People I follow" option is unchecked, visitors to your profile will not be able to see who you're following and who's following you. This information is completely hidden and protected."

Your activities privacy settings control which of your activities, if any, are published in the newsfeed. Even if you make all your activities public, certain events, such as following a private document, are only ever seen by people who have access to the items in question.

"People Search is powered not only by your profile, but also by the content that you produce--i.e. the posts you make, the documents you create, and the discussions you have on communities. So in a way, your profile is more than just what you put into it, it's everything you do."

"A larger and more prominent profile photo, so you can identify yourself to others. And what's even better is that in this release we'll sync your photo not only across SharePoint but Exchange too," Microsoft adds. This means, the same photo will appear all across the Office suite.
