Twitter and Buddy Media developed a solution that will enable brands or any marketer who wants to screen the age of their followers-- to do so quickly and easily in a way that's consistent with standard industry practices.
The solution rolled out as a free service will be useful for alcohol brands and marketers from other industries with age-related requirements who are interested in marketing on Twitter.
Until now, companies have had to develop their own custom, one-off "age-screening" solutions. Now, the next time you try to follow an alcohol brand and other marketers who has opted in to Twitter's new "Age Screening" system, will ask you to submit your age, and you won't be allowed if you're too young.
Those who already follow, will get a direct message with a link to submit age, when they next follow of an opted-in brand, once a user has supplied their age through this process, they won't have to do so again if they want to follow other brands using this solution.
Here's how it works:
- "A user clicks to follow @brand.
- The brand automatically Direct Messages [Link: https://support.twitter.com/articles/14606] the user with a link to age.twitter.com.
- The user visits age.twitter.com and enters their age; this information is not shared with the brand.
- If the user meets the age threshold set by the brand, they will automatically follow the brand. If the user does not meet the age threshold the brand has set for their country, they will be unable to continue following the brand," Buddy Media explains.
Those who would like their company to use this feature, can sign up and submit their brand for approval here.
